Don't just throw it away...........

Today is a big day!! Tiki has testing to go to a Hawaiian school that is a huge school & what every parents dream of a school would be!! It is a private school K-12 ( worth $15,000 a year but only cost $2,000 ) made for kids with Hawaiian ancestry left behind by Princess Pauahi Bishop. In her Will she wanted the Hawaiian kids to have an opportunity, that they normally wouldn't have, to go to a private school.

There have been a couple of kids ( should I say their parents) who are Caucasian and have sued the school for discrimination. You can look at it that way....BUT the school IS IN HAWAII & it IS IN HER WILL. I don't think Hawaiians are discriminating.....they are just full filling a written last wish.

Some parents are fanatic about getting their kids into this school (drilling them, practicing day & night).. ... me? I would looooove her to get into this beautiful school, I help her with homework and just let God be the guide of things. Not taking her to try and get in is like holding a Lottery Ticket and NOT playing.

You raise a good point - there are many upon many Hawaiians who would love the opportunity to attend this school, to learn about the culture, language and history of her people who cannot go to the school for one reason or another or are hoping and waiting to be selected for this opportunity, so when people ask why can't my non-Hawaiian child attend this school, I say, why are you depriving of Hawaiians from going to this school by your non-Hawaiian child wanting to take that slot.

The mission and purpose for the will of the Queen was to look after her people during a time when the politics of the landscape would not ensure such basic rights afforded to the non-Hawaiian, hence the birth of the school so that her people may regain the rights and knowledge of their culture and language that was taken away from them. Only Hawaiians can and must continue to perpetuate and breath life into their language, history and culture because no one else will. The curriculum of the school, the will of the queen was designed to do just that.

There are many other schools non-Hawaiians can attend.

Hope your daughter gets in!

nice post!

I think you are doing the right thing. Guiding, but not applying too much pressure.

It is such a wonderful thing, what the Princess has done. I hope that everyone will take advantage of the opportunity given to them and pass down their heritage.

Kala- only you can set it straight with ALL the right words!! But in short...exactly! all non-Hawaiians have sooo many private schools they can attend. why take that slot away from a Hawaiian as stipulated!!!

Kathy- Thank you, they don't tell you how they did when they come out of testing....but she went IN with a smile and came OUT with a smile...that's all I can hope for ( it's pressure enough that they get whisked away from their parents to step inside a building they are unfamiliar with and THEN TO PREFORM??!!
